Staff Physical Therapist - Spokane, WA

Compensation: $70,000 - $90,000 per year

About the Job:

The Staff Physical Therapist evaluates and treats patients under orders from the referring physician. Evaluation and treatment programs are developed through the use of a variety of therapeutic procedures designed to restore loss of muscle strength, coordination, and body alignment, to control pain and to improve movement and function. This position oversees the supervision of support staff to ensure quality of care and maximum productivity. The Physical Therapist functions in accordance with 

their State Practice Act.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review patient information and evaluate the impact of the information on the assessment and treatment processes;

  • Conduct and document a complete functional assessment of the patient in accordance with

  • established guidelines and protocols;

  • Design and implement an individualized Plan of Care, appropriate to the age and needs of the patient, containing functional and measurable goals with input from both the patient and family;

  • Perform therapy treatment as ordered by the physician in a timely manner in accordance with established hospital guidelines;

  • Document progress in the patient’s medical record in accordance with established clinic, hospital and regulatory guidelines;

  • Meet established key performance indicators for minimum productivity levels of 1.25 – 1.75 patient visits per hour, taking into consideration various factors including, but not limited to, clinical setting and level of acuity (e.g. inpatient vs. outpatient vs. SNF), payer mix, length of treatment visit and other location specific factors;

  • Supervise, instruct, and train Rehabilitation Technicians in treatment procedures to be utilized while working with patients;

  • Communicate with physicians, patients, families, and other facility personnel, as needed, regarding a patient’s progress, problems, and discharge plans;

  • Follow all approved documentation guidelines pertaining to the Plan of Care, progress notes, and discharge summaries;

  • Orient patients to treatment procedures appropriate to their age and needs. Inform patients of any potential risk during any procedures;

  • Establish and instruct patient, family, and/or caregiver in home programs and discharge programs;

  • Assist in the continuum of care process when a patient requires additional rehabilitation following discharge;

  • Attend and participate in required clinic and/or department meetings, as well as any facility committee meetings as assigned;

  • Participate in the clinic or department quality improvement process;

  • Provide clinical supervision to Physical Therapy students as requested;

  • Work cooperatively and in a respectful manner with administrative personnel assigned to the clinic or department;

  • Cooperate with company credentialing and billing and collections personnel to maintain intact credentialing with all payer contracts and resolve any billing and collections issues that may arise including, but not limited to, denied claims and patient disputes;

  • Access continuing education opportunities appropriate to discipline and responsibilities;

  • Act in compliance with all regulatory, corporate, and professional standards and practice guidelines;

  • Provide input to the Director of Physical Therapy or Director of Rehabilitation Services on clinical issues and regarding clinical performance of LPTAs and Rehabilitation Technicians;

  • Complete all annual mandatory training and certification requirements; and

  • Perform other duties as assigned and required to provide quality care to patients and the community served by the clinic or hospital.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy, Master of Science degree or Doctorate of Physical Therapy;

  • Current license, certification, or registration in the state of practice;

  • Demonstrated competency in identified areas of specialization, including training for age-specific groups;

  • Demonstrated competency in applying the principles, methods, materials, and equipment necessary in the practice of physical therapy;

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Ability to assess patient and family needs and develop and implement a comprehensive Plan of Care;

  • Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards and requirements;

  • Knowledge of Medicare documentation standards; 

  • Familiarity and experience with one or more electronic medical records documentation systems; and

  • Recommended affiliation with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

Age Specifics:

This position interacts with all ages of patients, visitors, family members, and other staff, including infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

Physical Requirements:

  • Strength: Constantly required to push/pull, lift objects less than 50 lbs.; occasionally required to push/pull more than 300 lbs.; and lifting in excess of 50 lbs.

  • Manual Dexterity: Constantly required to perform simple motor skills and manipulative skills such as standing, walking, writing, and use of various types of therapeutic and office equipment. Frequently required to perform moderately difficult manipulative skills such as positioning patients and use of more complex office and therapeutic equipment.

  • Coordination: Constantly required to perform gross body coordination such as walking, stooping, standing while performing tasks, carrying, and lifting objects.

  • Mobility: Constantly required to walk and stand for long periods of time. Frequently required to remain in uncomfortable positions for long periods of time, such as bending over equipment, counters, tables, and squatting.

  • Visual Discrimination: Constantly required to see objects at close view to allow reading of instruments, physician’s orders, computer screens, chart reviews, and measurement tools. Frequently required to discriminate colors on medical records, equipment panels, and warning lights. Occasionally required to use depth perception and judge distance, size, shape, and color of objects.

  • Hearing: Constantly required to hear normal sounds with some background noise as in answering the phone, intercoms, alarm systems, patient call buttons, and equipment sounds and alarms.

Mental Requirements:

  • Constantly required to concentrate on fine details with continual interruptions; attend to task or function for more than 60 minutes at a time; understand and relate to specific ideas;

  • Remember tasks and assignments given at the beginning of a period of time and extending until completion of the assignment; and

  • Constantly required to demonstrate good judgment and safety.

Environmental Requirements:

  • Some potential for electrical shock from equipment;

  • Some exposure to humidity from hydrotherapy area and some potential for exposure to occupational hazards, which may include, but are not limited to, radiation, ultraviolet rays, chemicals, and other hazards which may be located in the industrial work sites they may frequent.

Travel Requirements:

Occasional travel may be required. Must be able to provide transportation to travel from one location to another.
