SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR

POSITION OVERVIEW

Maine Indian Education seeks a dedicated and experienced Special Education Coordinator to join our educational team. This vital role will assist the Director of Special Education in coordinating and implementing special education programs for students with disabilities across prekindergarten and high school programs. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with Maine Department of Education (MDOE) and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) special education regulations while advocating for the educational needs of our students.

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations for Special Education
  • Guarantee free and appropriate education for students with disabilities
  • Schedule and attend IEP meetings at various locations, including MIE schools, area high schools, and Child Development Services sites
  • Guide IEP Teams in decision-making to ensure FAPE for students in a financially responsible manner
  • Review and approve IEPs and Written Notices within required timelines
  • Monitor special education records and compliance with MDOE and BIE regulations
  • Assist with transition planning for students entering kindergarten, transitioning to high school, and preparing for post-secondary opportunities
  • Provide support and consultation to parents and staff working with identified students
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data to inform program recommendations

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher required
  • Valid State of Maine certification as a Teacher of Special Education (282)
  • Experience as a teacher of students with disabilities
  • Experience in special education case management
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws and regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Demonstrated organization and time-management skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position requires travel between MIE schools and other educational facilities
  • Ability to perform all necessary upper and lower body functions
  • Standard school environment with some exposure to noise and interruptions
  • Must be able to perform reaching, lifting, keyboarding, basic math, writing, and other physical tasks
