Summary

Join the Town of Shrewsbury, a full-service local government driven by high performance and creativity, as the Deputy Building Inspector! We are seeking a dedicated and highly skilled professional to serve as the Assistant Department Head for our Building Department. This brand new role involves advanced organizational, supervisory, and technical work to ensure compliance with town, state, and federal regulations. As a key leader, you will oversee all inspections, conduct staff meetings, develop programs, and manage personnel. Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and conduct comprehensive inspections for the Town’s Building Department.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all relevant town, state, and federal building regulations.
  • Conduct staff meetings and individual conferences to interpret policy, discuss problems, coordinate services, develop programs, and receive reports.
  • Manage and oversee the enforcement of building, fire safety, zoning, electric, plumbing, and sanitary codes.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the department budget.
  • Interpret and review construction plans, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Employ modern inspection techniques and practices to uphold safety and compliance standards.
  • Understand and navigate court procedures related to building and zoning issues.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or related field.
  • Four to six years of increasingly responsible experience in building code enforcement inspection with management experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Certification requirements as per M.G.L. c. 143, § 3 and 780 CMR 110.R7.2.3 for an Inspector of Buildings/Building Commissioner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of building construction practices, procedures, materials, and equipment.
  • In-depth understanding of state and local building codes and legal procedures relating to code enforcement.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret technical documents, such as blueprints, technical specifications, and plans.
  • Ability to make on-site inspections of construction, renovations, and alterations, and assess compliance with codes.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to handle complaints regarding Town services using tact and diplomacy.
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite; experience with Munis and OpenGov is preferred.

Pay: $76,700.00 - $90,000.00 per year
